Since you like writing poetry, you might consider looking into Writer's Guide to find out where you could submit greeting cards, what the submissions agreements are, how you send things to card companies, etc. This pays well (upwards of $150 per card) and I did this for many years.
B to C is business to consumer advertising. B to B (or B2B) is business to business.
What kind of writing do you like to do or are interested in? When I lived in Kansas City I belonged to writer's groups that would meet and write, critique each other's writing, have "free writing" exercises. I don't know what they are like in Chicago, but they were valuable for me. As was Natalie Goldberg's book "Writing Down the Bones" and anything by Anne LaMott. Stephen King also has a great book about writing.
Occasionally you can find writing gigs on craigslist.com that are a good way to get more experience.
Hey Leon! I guess my first chunk of advice is read, read, read; check out direct mail pieces you get at home, analyize promotional emails; go through B to C websites, and see if you can see the patterns, rhythms, commonalities in style.
And check out Jack Forde and Sean D'Souza's work; they have great ideas. (Also Nick Usborne is a terrific reference.)
BTW, I think the link to your website is broken :-)

Sorry I didn't reply earlier. I've been frantically busy this summer. I'd love to talk. You can reach me on Skype as wellwrittenwords. :)
