Copywriter's Roundtable Network

"'Whom are you?' he asked, for he had attended business college." - George Ade

After many, many hours (okay, years) of getting riled up about poor use of language, typos in menus, grammatically incorrect signage, I've started a blog/therapeutic ranting space called When I am Copyeditor General.

Why the title?

I've always thought there should be a federally appointed guardian of language; perhaps not with the zeal of the Académie française, but certainly spirited enough to call out organizations, businesses and individuals who aren't sufficiently careful about language use.

Do you have any particular bugbears in this regard? Feel free to let me know (if nothing else, so I don't start to think I'm the only obsessive one out there ...)

(Edit): Oh yeah, um, sorry, Sean ...

It's a little of both, I think. Part of it is that people don't read as much--or are reading online content, which isn't always as well edited as print--and so have a less formalized understanding of how language works. But I also know teachers who don't understand basic grammar to begin with (and I'm not tarring all teachers with the same brush here), so any lessons they pass along will be flawed.

What's the solution, I wonder?
